Over the past year, we have researched over 80 brokers. We use our proprietary rating system to rank brokers and sort out the best. In this article, I have focused on the best brokers for traders in New Zealand. I made sure to verify FMA regulation for each broker and reviewed the overall trust and transparency as well.

Every review and score on our site comes from independent, hands-on testing — no broker can pay to change them. Brokers pay to be listed on our site; this may affect which brokers we feature and where — never our reviews or scores. How we make money
  • Rankings are not for sale — the order comes from our test scores; no broker can pay for a higher spot.
  • The authority on broker reviews since 2011 — traders have relied on our independent broker testing for over a decade.
  • 80+ brokers tested every year — we test the whole market, so we know the benchmark — and which brokers actually beat it.
  • Every broker takes the same test — one published scoring system: 9 weighted categories, 250+ variables, measured hands-on by our analysts.
  • Every fact is checked twice — a dedicated editor re-verifies each data point, from licenses to spreads, before publication.

I also focused on region-friendly payment methods, the availability of NZD as the base currency, local support, and any bonuses are available for New Zealanders. I focused on the specific needs of New Zealanders and the ease of use for each broker.

Why We Picked It

Founded in 1974, IG provides trading opportunities in forex, stocks, indices, commodities, cryptocurrencies, and bonds. IG is regulated by the FMA and other top-tier bodies and offers competitive trading fees, a proprietary platform, and more than 18,000 markets.

Regional Features:

  • Regulated by FMA, registration number FSP684191
  • Leverage: Up to 1:30
  • NZD as a base currency
  • NZD-denominated CFD contracts
  • NZD in trading pairs
  • Local customer support

My test showed that the spreads at IG are excellent overall. The EUR/USD pair fluctuated between 0.6 and 0.9 pips during my test, and US Oil was just $0.02 at the same time, in US trading. The overnight swap fees are generally better than many would expect as well.

In addition to its appealing trading fees, IG’s strength lies in its extensive stock offering, encompassing over 16,000 stocks. The broker also surpasses the industry average by providing access to more than 100 forex pairs. This will allow traders to find plenty of trading opportunities far beyond major pairs.

IG offers a proprietary web platform and mobile app. They also offer L2 Dealer, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, TradingView, and ProRealTime.

BlackBull provides a massive and diverse range of markets, allowing you to trade more than 26,000 markets. The range of assets includes forex, indices, cryptocurrencies, commodities, and shares. This gives professional traders a wide range of ways to express their market views.

BlackBull has an extensive stock offering, with over 1,200 stocks available for trading. Beyond its stock offering, BlackBull offers an extensive number of forex pairs, more than 80.

BlackBull has MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView, BlackBull Invest, and CopyTrader. The broker offers three trading accounts: ECN Standard, ECN Prime, and Prime+. The ECN offers spreads as low as 0.8 pips, without commission. The ECN Prime offers spreads from 0.0, with commissions of $3 per side, per lot. The Prime+ account is for high-volume traders, with the ability to get cheaper rates and rebates.

For my test, I used the ECN Standard and used MT5. I found the spread in the EUR/USD to be true with the 0.8 pips suggested on the webpage. I also found USD/JPY to be the same, but fluctuating to as high as 1.0 pips.

BlackBull also has a lot of webinars and market research, making it ideal for those looking for a bit of extra analysis to build a trading position on. The speed offered at BlackBull is also adequate for professional traders who need super-fast executions.

Why We Picked It

Plus500 opened in 2008, on the heels of the Great Financial Crisis. The company has proven its strength since then and is even listed on the FTSE 250 in London. While Plus500 is regulated by the FMA in New Zealand, it is actually the Australian entity that is regulated in New Zealand. The company offers over 2,800 instruments for traders to take advantage of.

The trading platform for Plus500 is excellent and very intuitive for traders to use. The mobile version is also excellent and allows quick order execution, as well as a portal to access multiple asset classes.

Regional Features:

  • Regulated by FMA, registration number FSP486026
  • Leverage: Up to 1:30
  • NZD as a base currency
  • NZD in trading pairs
  • Local customer support

My test was run on the web-based browser platform, and I found the spreads to be excellent, with the EUR/USD pair having an average of 0.8 pips. This platform also includes the +Insights Tool. This tool keeps track of where clients are positioned, giving a quick read of the trader sentiment in the markets you are trading.

The platform also has a large number of trading indicators, making technical analysis fans feel welcome here. I liked the speed of the platform and had no difficulties with order speed or execution. The markets that Plus500 offers include forex, shares, ETFs, cryptocurrencies, indices, commodities, and even options. This allows traders to find an opportunity across nearly any market condition.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Highly competitive spreads with no commissions.
  • NZ-regulated broker.
  • Feature-rich web and mobile platforms.
  • Over 2,800 financial instruments offered.
Cons
